New Atlantis - gathering post
When the storm continued to worsen and it was apparent this storm was much more than a typical storm, the ITF went to work trying to warn people of what was coming and help them find a place to shelter in. New Atlantis was one of those places, since there was a ZPM powered shield--but Sam didn't want to turn it on until the last minute, so that as many people as possible could be sheltered inside.
She wanted to get as many people to safety as possible, and that included Eli and Claudia. They'd gone camping. Eli had told her and Jack that they were going, but hadn't said exactly where--and Sam had wanted to ask but couldn't insist on it, because Eli was an adult and Sam didn't think she knew him well enough that she could really argue it. Now she wished she had argued it, because they hadn't been able to find them in the time they had to search. Eli had been the one hope Sam had that things had actually been fixed, that the timeline was good, and she really, really did not want anything to happen to him. But they'd had to give up and come back when the wind got so strong that searching became impossible.
Finally the winds and rain were at the point where they couldn't wait any longer, and Sam checked (and double-checked, and checked again) the connections and turned on the shield. The shield easily held back the wind and rain, since it was designed to hold back an entire ocean from Atlantis when submerged, but she didn't want to take too many chances, so she kept an eye on everything, making sure no one came too close to the ZPM/laptop setup Rodney had created at some long-ago point. All they needed was for someone to trip and fall over it. With the shield up, the area in and around the huts was rain and wind free, if still soggy from earlier rain, making it easy to move between the huts in the settlement. Sam hated that there were empty huts because people had disappeared, but at least it meant that there were more places for people to sleep until the storm passed.
After rechecking the equipment for a fifth time, Sam went to change into dry clothes and parked herself near the ZPM in case Jack's curious new pup decided to come sniffing around it. She just hoped the ZPM had plenty of juice left to keep the thing running as long as they needed it.
