Jacob was never going to get used to the fact that, with a handful of exceptions, the weather on the island simply didn't change. It was October, according to the calendar he'd seen in the Compound, but it sure didn't feel like any October he'd ever had back in La Push. The weather during the summer hovered right around sixty degrees and by this time of year it'd be much lower than that and the ocean would be so cold that you'd have to be a wolf to take a dip. Here, Jacob could swim all year round and today he'd done his two miles without really breaking a sweat (could you sweat in the water anyway?)
That done, he toweled back off and padded up the boardwalks back to the Compound, wondering if he could grab some food to go before heading back to the Homestead and Belle. His girlfriend. He didn't know if they used that word when she came from, since she was kind of old-fashioned, but he figured that Belle read enough to know what it was. Just thinking about her had a grin on his face and as he rifled through the kitchen, he tried to figure out what she might like him to bring back. Head buried in a cabinet, he heard someone come in.
"Anything you want? I can get it for you and save you the trip."
