Tabula Rasa Day
Even with all the parties that I helped coordinate throughout the year, Tabula Rasa Day had become my favorite. I'm not sure who started the tradition, but civic-minded as I'd become, I appreciated the idea of us having our own, self-determined tradition that celebrated not some holiday brought from another culture, but us as a community. Half Thanksgiving, half Independence Day, it was something entirely our own.
As was traditional, the bulk of the celebration took place outside, the core of it in the area at the front of the Compound and the Hub, but it spilled easily over into the surrounding areas. The front doors of the Compound were propped open, the scent of a veritable feast spilling out from the kitchen: Roast, fowl, all manner of seafood, a plethora of side dishes and, of course, every imaginable dessert. Islanders brought their own stores of alcohol to supplement what was being served at the Hub, and there were people everywhere: Milling in and out of the Compound, seated along the edge of the boardwalk running through the middle of the festivities, singing karaoke on the stage at the Hub, or perched on picnic blankets beneath the lights we'd strung up, happily eating and socializing.
This year stood out from the rest, rainbows arcing across the clear blue sky throughout the day until they were replaced by bursts of meteor showers in the evening. Island gods, higher power or sheer coincidence, it was definitely something to remember.
