This is a story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down.
Sorry, sorry, sorry. Forgive me, it's just, you get a chance like that, it's really, really hard to resist. Honestly? I don't know what this story is about. But my life getting turned upside down is… it's definitely in there. One minute I was fending off the advances of a guy I've known for, oh, twelve years because he thought I was a prostitute, the next I'm… well, I'm here, wherever that is.
It's a little easier to look on the bright side now, though, with the sun up and the grand tour done. Maybe not the bright side, I mean, I have still apparently been kidnapped by some kind of unknown mad scientist, taken away from my home, my family, my dog and everything I've ever really known, so that's not in anything's favor, but it's amazing what a night's sleep, a fresh change of clothes, a shower and a meal can do for a girl's mood. Especially the meal, my god, people around here can cook.
With a muffin still in hand, Olive stands in front of the bookshelf. She's been warned about all of this, thanks to Eduardo, but she really doubts that she's going to stop being either confused or mesmerized anytime soon. Behind her, the jukebox is blasting "Pocketful of Sunshine" and she can't help singing along under her breath between bites, thumbing through volume after volume on the shelf.
It's such a wide variety of titles and she's formed a little stack, deliberately ducking down to the next shelf and then popping right back down again to see what's filled in the gaps. Maybe that makes her as easily entertained as a five year old, she doesn't know. She doesn't care either. This place is awful and she feels a little sick if she thinks about the consequences of her being here, of not seeing her parents for god only knows how long, but it's fascinating, too, one step removed from the Beast's castle in terms of enchanted objects. She's ready for something to start talking to her, although she supposes that's what the jukebox is doing, in a roundabout way, saying it knows her, which is beyond creepy, but in a way that's simultaneously awesome. If this is really happening, if this is what she's stuck with, then she intends to enjoy it until she can escape from it.
"Hey," she says, glancing over her shoulder at the nearest person, "what happens if you take all the books off? Do you just turn around and there are more books?" She's almost ready to try it herself instead of waiting for an answer.
