In the case of Ao3, some of the main things I've heard about it and gleaned myself is Ao3 is a haven to writers who feel they can't get as graphic as they'd like because of FFN's guidelines. Though the seaching/ tag filters are different than FFN, but once you catch on it gets easier. You're more likely to find a quality read there then you are on FFN depending on fandom. It never hurts to give it a try. The only thing that might be disappointing about it is reader reviews are probably less because of the fact the site is smaller.
