Let me give you a quick break down of how the house is set up.

We took the smallest of the three bedrooms and turned it into the office for EK and I.
I have a recording desk (with 19 space rack built in) in there that faces the window.

The one car garage was converted before we moved in and EK and I split it. The side where light is her area, and the ( Read more... )

Very interesting details, but you left out the most important one-- what are you using for a mic?? I don't record at home very often, so all I have currently are some regular ol' Shure mics (the classic SM58 is great for recording the uke, and I've also got a SM99 for vox). Of course, I'm not going to get really great sound out of those anyway because I'm just using the preamps in my Mackie mixing desk. I've had my eye on a couple of Heil microphones (heilsound.com) - a lot of people will tell you that condenser or ribbon mics are way better for studio environments, but I've always loved the pickup and response of a good dynamic mic, and Heil does nothing but.

As for Skype, I would not recommend using it for any professional applications. It's a huge resource hog (I find I get a lot of breakup when I try to run ANYthing even remotely processor intensive when I use it) and it just seems buggy in general to me.

I have an MXL 990 that I primarily use, and if I am doing an interview or podcast, I have a Shure 55SH.
I have heard great things about the Heil mics.
If I keep getting gigs like the one I am doing tomorrow, I am going to buy a PR 40 (though for sheer cool factor, I would love a a Classic Pro)
