Is it true that chugging cranberry juice only works if it's unsweetened? I have a friend who's especially prone to UTIs, and I remember not understanding why it's so torturous to drink cranberry juice (goes so well with vodka!) until she informed me that hers was unsweetened.

I'm not familiar with that claim. The only thing I can think of is, unsweetened cranberry juice might have more actual cranberry juice than cocktail, and therefore may be more effective. Theoretically, it shouldn't matter how much sugar is in the juice, since sugar is not excreted in the urine unless you have diabetes or kidney failure. But pure cranberry juice is quite sour (which makes sense because that's what acid tastes like).
