I'm glad to have found this post after watching HCL this weekend. Thank you - it has helped me to better understand the film.

Would you happen to know anything about how it came about that Joe raped Billy right before the five year break up? I have not read Turner's book.

Thanks again!

You're most welcome!

About the rape - or not rape - it's not mentioned in Turner's original novel or in Craine's Portrait of a Thousand Punks. John mentions it to Mary the fan when she comes to see the band:

Anyway, Joe pops Billy on the side of the head when he's not looking, and Billy flushes Joe's stash down the toilet. And then, they just started wailing on each other. We didn't even make the stage. Major disaster all the way around. They were fighting over movies? No. That was just how they dealt with the real issue, which was Joe fuckin' g Billy up the ass the night before.

Probably out of spite. I wasn't there. Maybe it was a bet or a competition they had, or maybe they were trashed... and Joe nailed Billy when he passed out. Anyways, it's vague.

some time ago. I can dig out the link if you want it, but you should go through groupsession anyway :D

In _unhurt_'s post about HCL here in the files, in the links to meta, there's one which deals more specifically with "The Night that Launched 1,000 Fanfics".

THANK YOU so much for the information - I have found everything but the Take One article - I'll keep looking for it.

I'm such a moron - I remember the bit with John speaking with Mary backstage. Isn't it funny how John seems to know so much about what's going on with Billy? The film just begs for repeated viewings. I think I was overwhelmed with CKR goodness to really pay attention!

Thanks once again - I appreciate it.

...in every restaurant scene, an AM radio is playing the ‘60s hit “Where You Going, Billy?” by sugary B.C. pop band The Poppy Family.

Seriously? Wow! Thank you for this article! So many interesting comments and details.
