I use Audacity. It's free and available for pretty much every platform, and is very good at what it does, but it doesn't come with lots of voice-effect presets.

I can't really say much because I use Garageband and some weird program that came with the computer for recording. I guess the first question is what kind of computer do you have?

Macbook. I didn't know Garageband had a recording option?

I'm pretty sure it does...Your computer should also come with a recording program called Audio Recorder. You can use that and save the uncompressed files then edit them in Garageband.
