I was still in my bed. Being the mayor of the fine city of Sunnydale, gave me the luxury of sleeping unti eight or eight thirty and then reporting to the office at nine, or thereabouts.
Anything that I might be needed for before nine, would be handled rather intensely by Allen, who was a bit uptight, but was effective when it came to taking orders.
I did not like to be awakened so early, and when I grabbed the cellular phone on my nightstand, I saw that it was the little rodent, Snyder.
This had better be good to wake me from my beauty sleep. "Hello,"
"Hi, mayor Wilkins, It's principal Snyder, here, I didn't wake you, did I?"
It sounded like I had, although the leader of the city at almost seven in the morning should have been up, with all of the things that had to be on his docket for the day, with having to run the city and all.
The fact that he sounded as if he had been awakened from sleep, was just weird.
"As a matter of fact, principal Snyder, you did wake me, and I don't appreciate being awakened from my sleep, prematurely, it turns me into a real bear for the rest of the day, and nobody likes that, trust me."
I sat up, cleaning the cobwebs out. I was tempted to tell him to call back, but I could just make this a brief conversation and then go back to bed for another hour, possibly even two, and then go to work late.
"Well, sir, I was on my way to the elementary school, and I stopped at the newsstand to pick myself up a paper to see what kind of drug news and or busts that had occurred in the city as always, when I bumped into a rather tall, and rude British man. He insulted me, but then I found that he is the librarian at Sunnydale High School, and I thought of our earlier conversation."
It wasn't like me to talk so much, but I was curious as to what kind of decision that he was going to make about that idiot, Flutie.
"That's all that I can ask for, sir. Again, I am sorry for bothering you. I am close to the school now, and will let you go, but please, keep me in mind and know that Flutie, who I have met, is incompetent."
He said goodbye and hung up the phone, as I pulled into the parking lot.
Little kids were all strewn about, just sitting there, waiting to be hit by a car.
Honestly, I was in shock that some of these children's parents were even allowed to bare children in the first place.
Weird. I didn't like Flutie. I didn't like this Rupert Giles librarian, even if the Mayor did, and some of my subordinates were going to pay today for my crankiness.
A decision would have to be made soon, because while Flutie was a nice enough man, he wasn't mean enough to be the disciplinarian that I wanted in my town's high school.
Snyder was a weasel, but he was the right weasel for the job. I set my alarm clock for nine. I would go in today at ten. What were they going to do, fire me? I laughed as I rolled over and closed my eyes, pretending my Edna May was there with me.

"So why are you calling me so early, Snyder?"
