Apples, Apologies and Attitude

Sun gleamed through the branches, splitting scattered slices of light across her hair and body. Book in lap; she looked up to the sudden dark shadow looming overhead. “Can I help you?” Winry asked politely enough, at least in her opinion.

“I’m looking for the Elric brothers. Do you know where I can find them?”

Her eyes turned like shards of glass as she mouth out roughly, “What do you want with them?”

The man, tall, dark and handsome smiled down at her like she was a mere child. “Official business.”

She snorted, throwing her book closed as she stood up to level a glare at him. “Which is code for “Let me send some men out to die while I stay alive” I don’t know where they are and even if I did I wouldn’t be telling you anything.”

“I see.” He nodded. “May I ask your name?”

Uneasiness settled in her stomach. “What do you want with my name?”

He gave her rueful smile that had her heart jump. What the hell was that all about, she wondered to herself. “Well aren’t you full of suspicion. I just wish to know your name so that I may address you properly instead of Feisty-Tempting-Goddess.”

Winry felt her cheeks flame. “You didn’t tell me yours…”

“Mustang. Roy Mustang.” Inclining his eyes to hers, she knew he waited for hers and so she finally gave in. But only because she wished to, she stubbornly thought.

“Winry.”

“Winry?”

She gave a short bob of her head, her blonde hair pooling over her shoulder. “Rockbell.”

Roy rubbed his chin as if in thought before nodding. “Unique, it fits you quite well.”

“What do you want?” She snapped quickly. Already the uneasiness crept its way back into her body and her hands tightened around the forgotten book.

“I’ve already told you…I’m looking for-”

“Listen you military dog, I’ve already told you I don’t know where they are.”

Roy’s eyebrow went up at this. “You also said that even if you had you wouldn’t tell me, correct?”

Winry, uneasy, gave a shrug. “Yes. What’s that got to do with anything?”

“I’m simply waiting to see if you were lying to me.”

Mouth falling open, she went to say something and found absolutely nothing. When she couldn’t think of anything rational to fight back with, she resorted to a bit of childish method. “You’ll never find them. So go. Away!” She shouted this last bit and stormed off to the house. Before her hand reached the doorknob, something hit her sandal. Glancing down, she picked up a shiny red apple and frowned. Roy, the strange yet intriguing man smiled to her.

“I’m simply a man sent to do a job as I’m sure you have one you do as well.”

She raised the apple as if in question.

“An apology.”

She frowned, watching him as he walked away, until he was only a tiny dotted form in the hillsides and shouted. “But you got this from my apple tree!”
