Heh, it used to be back-asswords several years ago: UNL only accepted VISA (Mastercard also?) and no other credit cards. And at that time all I carried was Discover (which I still prefer), so I had to break down and get a VISA card. Then my last semester, or shortly before (in the Spring of '04), this flipped: they now only accepted Discover, and nothing else.
UNL doesn't, because if I recall, they pissed VISA off by passing their service charges off to the payer, which is a violation of their terms of service or whatever.
I have to fucking show up in person and throw a sweaty wad of cash at a stone-age organization yeah, that's pretty much how i rolled for the last four years...cash only..they also REALLY lose checks frequently or just choose not to process them for whatever reason. If for some reason you ever need to talk to someone in graduate studies about payment and holds I now know a very helpful man there who is awesome and really worked his butt off to get my stuff figured out...but undergrad payments are hell. There are 1000 other students just like you who put it off till now and are pissed off at them and they have to deal with every single one and try to "help" every single one while still doing their normal jobs on top of it. i've been in your situation before though, the best thing to do is just try to remain patient and keep asking for supervisors until you get to someone who can help you.
I should also mention that the fires were also fueled by being transferred back and forth between two departments FIVE times trying to resolve a simple problem with a privacy block on my account for Emily to have access to discuss billing matters, got my call dropped once, one guy apparently didn't know how to transfer and told me to call such and such a number.
Ouch. Sorry. :( It reminds me, though, my books aren't here yet and one of my classes starts tomorrow. I also don't see them charged to my FA yet which means... they BETTER have processed it.
