My dad and I had a conversation about Esther Williams, in which he described her as "the Jackie Chan of swimming."

And then twenty minutes later, in a callback joke, he reformulated the statement as Esther Williams:swimming::Jackie Chan:martial arts.

Just capped off a mother/daughter Valentine's Day by watching Whip It, which was a movie that did exactly what I hoped it would, none of the things I feared, and passed the Bechdel test with flying colors.

This was a really excellent day.

I first cut all my hair off to shorter-than-earlobe length when I was 10. Since then, it's only been past my chin a couple times, and has often been much shorter. A friend on Facebook linked to this, and I say, with sincerity and deep admiration, that this is one of the gayest things I have ever seen. And by gay, I mean joyful, I mean unabashed, I mean unconcerned with heteronormativity, I mean beautiful, I mean really good and goddamn queer. Hats off to you, Johnny Weir. You are a class act.
