On a more serious note, I do it to make sure all angles of a topic are explored so the best decision can be made. If I see a point for either side that hasn't been brought up, I bring it up incase it sways the eventual decision.

I tend to avoid arguments that I don't think matter though. They have the same enthusiasm leeching effect. I make meh noises and walk away from them.

"Meh" is also a word that should be banned. If people don't care enough to make proper responses, they shouldn't respond.
