I also started the series with Kushiel's Scion, completely by mistake. I went Scion -> Justice -> Mercy, which is considered a separate series (the Imriel series). Then I went back to the Phedre series (Dart -> Chosen -> Avatar) and read those.
The Phedre series was good. But it wasn't THAT good. Kushiel's Dart, the first one in the series, was Carey's first book and in my humble opinion sort of unexceptional. I think that if I had started with Dart, I would have put it aside after a hundred pages or so and never gotten back to the series.
I suggest you find Kushiel's Mercy, the last book in the Imriel series, and then go back and see if you want to try the Phedre series. Maybe you'll have a completely different view of it than I did, but I didn't want to take the chance that it would bore you and you'd never get interested in that author.
Aren't they beautiful?! I read Dart about 5 years ago, have worked my way through all of them as they've come out. Just waiting for Mercy to be delivered now :)
