Oh yeahhh I hear this too! When someone's like 'God.. I slept at 6am this morning doing my projects and I have to wake up at 8am for this stupid class, and I can't concentrate cos I'm dozing off yadda yadda..' I just can't sympathize. I mean, I'm taking the same classes and manage just fine.

Little pats on the back and the occasional treat is good, but all the time? Gah, no. I think in a way this is carried from childhood, when some parents praise the kid to no end for every little thing: drawing a shitty picture, not spilling food all over the place, not shitting all over the place, graduating school (that's not an achievement! That's a given!).. it creates a false sense of accomplishment and lowers goals and standards for the kid.
