My mother had a particularly hard time with the fact that I was sick. Am sick. She cried a lot.
They used to both help patch me up after my transformations.. but then my father stopped, said he couldn't do it anymore. So my mother did it alone. She always cried. I learned how to clean and bandage myself by seven, so she wouldn't have to see me anymore, but she still cried.. when I came back out afterwards and she saw the bandages.
She cried when I told her about having trouble at school-- everyone knew back then. So I stopped telling her. She used to cry when she hugged me. So I stopped letting her.
By the time I went to Hogwarts, she stopped crying. She used to send me letters often. She was happy when she could put it out of her mind. She only cried when I came home for the summer. But I didn't have anywhere else to go.

Your mother's birthday was today. Friday, that is. The thirtieth. She's forty-nine. Well. Twenty-two, I suppose.
And Severus turned forty-nine on the ninth of this month.
For future reference, Sirius' birthday is July 16th. He'll be turning forty-nine, or twenty-five.
All these paradoxes.

Why doesn't anyone ever tell me these things before they happen?

If it helps, your mother didn't want anyone to make a big deal of it. She helped me make a cake. I gave her a small gift, from Sirius and I.

You're not scary, you know. Except for one day a month. They couldn't handle you being sick once a bloody month.

I appreciate..
I appreciate what you're doing. You're a very good friend and I understand where you're coming from.
But I need this.
Desperately.
Don't take it from me.

But you know I'm right.
