Remus had turned nineteen two weeks ago. It had been his first birthday in seven years, that hadn't been celebrated inside Hogwarts' walls, and it had been his best one ever. Lily and James had been there, and Peter-- and of course, Sirius, whom he shared a flat with. They had been living together since they had graduated from Hogwarts, so it was easy for the darker young man to let his friends inside so that they could decorate the flat in secret, preparing all of the decorations while Remus was away at the store. When he had come home, they had surprised him by jumping out from behind the furniture, and the rest of the night had been spent eating cake, opening presents, and watching James and Sirius have a little bit too much to drink. All in all, that had been the best night of the young werewolf's life. That night, none of them had known that Lily would soon be with child. That night, none if them knew that their mutual friend would betray them. That night, none of them had known that in two years time, two of them would be dead, one of them would be in Azkaban, one of them out be in hiding, and the werewolf would once again be left all alone. It had just been a good night, a fantastic night, with no worries. Remus' nineteenth year of life had been his best. And it had all gone down hill from then. His would-be Lover had been blamed for the murder of his best friend and his wife, as well as Peter. Harry had been orphaned and Remus had been denied any contact with the boy. Sirius had been imprisoned and Remus couldn't even bring himself to attempt to make any contact. Two year from now, Remus' happy life would come to an abrupt halt. But he didn't know that now, as he sat in the strange coffee shop sipping a cup of tea. All he knew was that he was somewhere different, and he wasn't quite sure what to do. He always did his best thinking over a cup of warm tea.

He lifted the cup to his lips again, blowing on it as pale blue eyes slid over the other people in the shop. It looked like the place was being resotred, or refinished.. or repaired after an accident. But it still looked warm enough. It was freezing outside, which explained his heavy coat (it was actually Sirius' coat, that Remus had taken today, before heading out for his customary early morning walk), and the scarf he had wrapped around his neck. Dirty blonde hair kept falling into his eyes, but he ignored it and simply made a mental note to get a haircut when he got back home.

Home. He didn't even know how far away 'home' was. He had been walkig around their quiet neighborhood at about seven, like he did every day.. glvoed hands pushed deeply into his pockets as pale eyes focused on his feet. Step over the stick. Go around the abandoned pile of dog poop. Miss stepping on the crack-- he didn't want to break his mother's back. But eventually, the snow-cleared sidewalk had come to a stop, and a surprised Remus had looked up, to find that he was standing in front of a snow-covered playground. They didn't have any playgrounds in their neighborhood. How far had he walked? And after wandering around his new surroundings, he had found this coffee shop and settled down. He had found out that he was in Canada, after speaking with a waitress, and needed time to think. There was no way he could have crossed an ocean without noticing. He would feel be feeling a little damp, after all. So how had he ended up here? Remus took another slow sip of his tea and let out a breath, sending ripples through the dark liquid. It was times like this that he wished he'd been able to talk Sirius into a telephone, because the woman at the coffee shop had offered him a telephone to call his home, but she hadn't offered him an owl. He was in the middle of muggle Canada, with no way to contact Sirius, and no way to find the nearest wizarding town. Another sip of tea helped to calm his nerves. The best thing to do now was just to try and keep calm.
