why is it that songs have certain memories attached to them?

i love the song crash into me by dave matthews but i hate the memories that are associated with it. i'd like them to be pleasant ones but they aren't.

most of all, i wish i was still in communication with the person it reminds me of...

It´s is strange the way songs can make us remember things of the past. Not only is there the emotion of the song lyrics, but it seems inevitable that there are other emotions attached. I am with you though, why does that happen?
