in case you run out of "and this is why I'm awesome" material, there's also "and this is why I like YOUR company, this is What I like about Your company" stuff you could write. People looking to hire want to know 2 things: is this person competent, and is this person a good fit for My company (does he/she really want the job? appreciate the co-workers he'll be getting? the job benefits? the atmosphere?). in some cases the latter thing seems really pointless (good luck finding someone who's always wanted to work as a cashier at Duane Reade), but for some reason people care.
The short answer is that I have a 2 page (double-spaced) limit, while the slightly longer answer is that I had a number of things to cover (motivation being one of them), and dwelling on what, precisely, I want this take up valuable "I'm awesome" space.
I'll add that my circumstances are a rather... err... unorthodox. Well, unless we correct for it being me. Then it's only slightly strange.
