The most amusing thing about this is that prior to the 18th century, people DID spell things in the English language however they wanted to. The creation of the dictionary was what led to English being codified. It also slowed a lot of its growth and flexibility.
I'm as much of a grammar nut as the next person (I hate, hate, HATE it when people use apostrophes incorrectly). I simply find it really funny that our rigidity toward the improper use of the language is so incredibly different than it was just 300 years ago.
Dude, Shakespeare spelled his name 6 different ways and created thousands of new words, hundreds of which are still in common usage. I'm somewhat glad the rhetor system wasn't in place yet.
