If you don't watch Torchwood, this won't make sense. If you do, it's a spoiler.
I am at a loss for words.
It's no secret that we don't always get along. I have had mixed feelings about you from the start. I feel immense joy and want to praise you heavily because you brought back Doctor Who, and reinvented it to fit our current place in the world. With the new and improved Doctor Who you cast the rather smashing David Tennant, thus helping his rise to fame and helping this Doctor Who run to become the most popular in the 46 year history of the show. Kudos.
But then someone cast Matt Smith (otherwise known as emo-boy who doesn't even LIKE Doctor Who), and Doctor Who is all but ruined for me. And, whether you admit it or not, we all know you had a hand in it.
But, you gave us Torchwood: the rather adult spin-off of Doctor Who featuring Captain Jack Harkness. Kudos again.
And then it all went horribly wrong.
You killed off 2 of the five members of the Torchwood team....in the same episode. Killing cast members off one at a time is the standard. Let the fans get used to one being gone before you knock off another. But no. You have to go and reduce the team nearly in half all in one "woke up on the wrong side of the bed" day.
Then, you allowed the move of Torchwood from BBC 3 to BBC 1, thus forcing it to drop all of the adult-natured aspects of the show, which was what made Torchwood different from Doctor Who and the Sarah Jane Adventures. Note, I didn't say better. Torchwood fell into almost a different genre because of it's ability to touch on more mature themes. However, this move means that, even if Torchwood carries on, it will never be the wonder that it was for it's first two seasons.
Next, you took season three, the first season to air on BBC 1, and turned it into a 5-part mini series, which you chose to air on five consecutive nights. This does not bode well. Yes, ratings will boom, but in the gap between this season and the next, Torchwood will lose its following. Is the series to be cancelled? Why move it to BBC 1 only to cancel it? Even the actors fear that this may be the end of Torchwood.
And now.......
Now you've reduced the Torchwood crew by yet another member. Unfortunately, this time, you reduced it by the most beloved not-main-character in the series. It's like killing one of the Doctor's companions. It's just something you don't do. Now the team is down to Jack, the all beloved main character, and Gwen, the character no one likes. Good job there Uncle Rusty.
I want to be optimistic. I want to hope that tomorrow, when the final episode of this season airs, that you will pull off one of the "hand of God" maneuvers that you have become famous (and disliked) for, and find a way to bring him back. I've never been one for apologizing or retracting, but I want to hope that tomorrow I will have to retract this post and apologize for it.
I'm out of forgiveness for you RTD. You have one episode to fix it.
