Spring

Spring nights are for movies. Jack was a deprived child and Junior's something of a film buff (he calls them films, for starters) so this phase of his education is something he takes very seriously. They disagree on just about everything. Jack likes fast action and clever jokes; Junior's more into the psychological stuff. But what they can agree on is Friday night movies in general - because that means snuggling up on the couch under Junior's big blanket, Jack making kettle corn, and clinging to each other during all the good parts. Afterward, they're so comfortable and warm and cozy that they don't even move, just drift off there on the couch or stay up into the morning hours, talking. Junior loves talking to Jack, he loves the lilt of his low, crass voice and how he drags out the vowels like a gangsta. Jack loves talking to Junior, loves his precise language, the delicate phrasing and how much he thinks about each of his words. They could listen to each other for hours, and on spring nights, they do.

Summer

Summer nights in California mean everything. They mean barbecues on the beach, fireworks, late night drives, and late night... hanging around while Sam tries to fix whatever went wrong with the car. It breaks down so often, but Sam's so proud of it, and Jack doesn't even mind. He loves having this time with Sam, seeing him swear so chastely and smile into his car engine. And sometimes, when he can't figure it out and they have to wait for a tow, they lie down on their backs in the scrubby grass at the side of the road, elbows brushing, and they watch the stars. For such a jock, Sam's got this enormous and open heart, and he isn't afraid to believe in the big, beautiful, lovely things in life. Jack thinks that his brothers would probably like him. He's just so real.

Fall

Fall is for school, and this year is Junior's last. That's partially a good thing but mostly it's just insane, because he likes to fill up his schedule way past capacity and the classes are only getting harder. This year, though, Sam's not in school with him, and Junior thinks that it might be a lot worse - but instead, it's somehow better. Instead, Sam's home when he gets there, and nights are spent spread out over the living room floor, studying. He isn't exactly much of a help, but Junior loves to have him there, and Sam likes it right here, on the outside looking in. Looking at Junior, really, and the way his hair rumples under his fingers when he's particularly stumped, and how he glasses always end up across the room.
Winter

Winter nights, of course, are for everything.

California doesn't get snow, which always weirds Jack out. Sam loves that about him, but he and Junior are both such LA bums that they can't even really comprehend liking snow. And anyway, it's not even really winter yet, but Jack says that winter begins in November, when the air gets really biting. In Michigan, that is. Sam just laughs. For once, he's looking forward to Thanksgiving. He catches Junior's eye across the table and knows that he is, too, and probably for the first time as well. They've never been much for families. They've never had one they could be proud of before.

It's midnight on the night before Thanksgiving, and Jack's phone buzzes. Junior picks it up, glaces at the screen, hands it to Sam. "Just says Green," he says over his shoulder to Jack, who's doing something in the kitchen.

Sam answers it. "Hello?"

"Jack, that you?"

But before Sam can say another word, Jack's plucking it out of his hands, leaning on the back of his chair and nosing into the side of his head with a smile. "...Hi, Green. 'Sup?"

And then his face drains of all color, and the smile falls off his face.
