SAN FRANCISCO, 1905
When death has come, we are not.

She fled death -
and in coming here
the Barbary Plague
ports abandoned and fixed
in rigor mortis
did not dispel her conviction
that there was only ever
one way of escape.
She did not seek me out -
but in finding me
the bare knife and the empty hand
the fire and the bullet
giving chase
will never
catch us.
