Is it okay to comment if I've 1) read; 2) understand; and 3) am "fat" (229 lbs, 5'4"). . . but don't agree with lots of points made in the first article?

:-)

But I won't discuss here. I'll agree to disagree and not have any discussions with the word "fat" in them. :-)

btw -- (she said, doing exactly what she said she wouldn't) -- people are always nonplussed when I, a fat person, use the word fat. E.g., at a store: "Where's the fat lady section?" I don't care, it's just a description and I don't attach all those other negative and moral attributes to it. It's a size description, and I want to go straight to the clothes that fit and not spend hours searching through "petites" and "teen" sizes. Kind of like how black people can call eachother "nigger" but you'd damn well better not if you're white. :-)

Same here. There are quite a few points that I don't agree with on that first article at all.

I'm fully aware that many, many people disagree with most, if not all, of that article.

While this list of links was posted mostly for me, in response to a conversation with someone who just didn't understand why using an image of a fat woman to talk about everything that was wrong with America made me feel bad, if you guys are interested (because I like all three of you), I'll retroactively friends lock this post to avoid hatespam and you're welcome to tell me what you don't agree with and why. Helpfully, I am prepared to discuss with you how my reactions might differ, and why. :)

I hope that in a few decades (or even sooner) the current rash of anti-fat ridiculousness passes, and we can all live our lives as whatever shapes or sizes we are, or want to be, without being judged or having qualities ascribed to us that have nothing to do with how we look.

Glah.

You live in a beautiful world of optimism, don't you? I want to go there, too. :)

For me, there is no current rush of anti-fat ridiculousness. That's just the way life is.

I deleted a paragraph of explanation, because it's not your fault and you have never treated me badly because of my size.

*deletes a bunch of stuff about how awesome you are, because you already know I think so*

*says a bunch of bad words, some of which are imprecations against assholes who try to hurt people for arbitrary reasons*

*hugs you back*

25+ years ago, nobody ever talked about "fat acceptance" and it was DAMN hard to find clothes. IMO it's gotten better, not worse...but that's like saying that racism's gotten better. Any at all is unacceptable.
