I don't know... I'm stuck between thinking that guided tours are totally naff and thinking it might be easier.

One of the big attractions of travel for me is getting by alone away from home comforts. I like language differences and I like weird yellow bus ticket machines.

Let me ponder more.

Ooh, Japan!! Never been, really want to, if only cos of the whole, "Squaddie67 is into Aikido" thing. There're alien cultures to immerse oneself in, and then there's Japan!!

You have to do the independant trip. Wandering round a strange city, not being totally sure if the palce you're looking for will be round the next corner or not is ace.

I wanna go to Japan. I was planning to go next summer, but a friend is getting married in New Zealand so I'll have to go there instead. It's a tough old life isn't it?

Are you going to see the monkeys that bathe in the hot springs?

I guess another factor to consider may be the commuting one: how easy it is to get from sight A to sight B on your own. I was spoilt in London. Your transport system - rail, tube, bus -is fantastic.
