not what it said on the tin

Saturday saw us rise at a relatively ungodly hour to meet an estate agent in Wheathampstead to view two flats. The first was listed as a barn conversion overlooking reed beds, which sounded as close to a rural idyll as you can get now the war is over and Spam is freely available. In fact it was a block of flats with a couple of wooden slats ( Read more... )

The prep school idea sounds like it'd be very workable (is that a word? It is now!). Sods law states that the people on the list ahead of you are multi-millionaire property developers, which would be bloody typical and incredibly unfair.

A XXXXXXX is more practical, and I'd get some benefit from it too. But a XXXXXXXX is always very pleasant, and you can look at the photos afterwards.

Even though I'd be prepared to mortgage my house for the chance, I suspect we'll be outbid on the prep school. But I can only hope that the council would look favourably on someone who'd create three new homes for their tenants rather than flogging them off to 'young professionals'. It's ridiculously attractive, with little round windows and gables and giant red bricks that reek of history.

I might rattle a few shutters when the others are visiting, to see if a haunted prep school puts them off...

my sister and her hubby rebuilt a derelict shed of a place, which they got for a pittance given its shed like appearance. it is now an envy makingly lovely 4 bedroomed palace with manicured gardens in which niece crawls and eats flies all day long. so, these things can be done. however, prolly helps if, like sister, your father in law is retired joiner with lots of builder mates ...

Actually, the prep school looks a lot like AA&T's house, except doubled over. I think it must be from the same period, and I fully anticipate a similarly anaglypta-d interior and crazy plumbing. Can't tell at present as all the windows and door are boarded up. Poo!
