Saturday saw us rise at a relatively ungodly hour to meet an estate agent in Wheathampstead to view two flats. The first was listed as a barn conversion overlooking reed beds, which sounded as close to a rural idyll as you can get now the war is over and Spam is freely available. Even though I'd be prepared to mortgage my house for the chance, I suspect we'll be outbid on the prep school. But I can only hope that the council would look favourably on someone who'd create three new homes for their tenants rather than flogging them off to 'young professionals'. It's ridiculously attractive, with little round windows and gables and giant red bricks that reek of history.
I might rattle a few shutters when the others are visiting, to see if a haunted prep school puts them off...
