You could also use rsync to keep multiple copies of the filesystem replicated (for a true DR scenario), it would be quick and painless on anything but the largest volumes (and even then as long as you kick it off often enough and once the initial sync was out of the way.). I synchronize a 100gb mp3 archive with a friend of mine over the net, encrypted with ssh and it works like a champ.

Not tried them myself. Don't have enough money to replace the hard drives in my old machine at home. Or make backup worthwhile.
There are also a couple of research projects like SFS (Self-ceritifying filesystem)
