Application!

Hi everybody! I'm Kate. I'm 26, and live just outside Boston, MA. mongolbbq told me about this community, and told me I should join, so here I am!

I graduated from RPI with a degree in Biochemistry/Biophysics. I work for a Boston hospital in a molecular biology research lab. We study the breast cancer susceptibility gene BRCA1, and its effects on DNA damage. Most of what I do is genetic engineering. And I'm going to be published in June or July... Wee!

Ok, let's see how good I am at following directions...  :)

1.  Pictures of myself.  Ok, I can do that.

And just to prove my complete nerdiness, try this on for size:

Yep, that's me as Strong Bad (in my Pep Band shirt no less!) and Dr. Evil.

And yes, there are only 3 images there. Ha ha! I can read!!! :)

2. Nerdy hobbies, huh?
Well...  here is an "expanded" list.

a.  Music.
I love to play and listen to music. I have almost 80 gigs of music on my desktop, and own hundreds of cds (probably could have paid off school by now if not for those... damn you cds!)... I also own an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar, a bass guitar, and a tenor sax. I have played clarinet since 4th grade, and at various points during high school and college I have also played bass clarinet, alto sax, bari sax, and bassoon. I was in my high school's marching band, and my college's pep band. I marched with a drum corps for a while, and moved from baritone bugle to contrabass bugle (the huge tuba-like thing).  I like to sing too.  Actually, it can be pretty damn near impossible to stop me from singing, especially when I'm in the car.  I even get paid to sing at weddings sometimes!  Hooray!

b. Computers.
I mentioned my desktop, right? It's a P4 2.4gHz with a gig of memory. It's got a total of 120 gigs between the two hard drives, and I built it myself. It has a metallic blue window case with the radioactive symbol etched onto the glass, and two of the fans have blue LED lights on them.  Doesn't she sound perty?   My laptop is a P4 2.8gHz with 386 MB of RAM...  I like it!

c.  The Web.
As far as websites go, my favorite is Homestar Runner (homestarrunner.com)... Strong Bad rocks, and Tee Gee Ess 4-eva (so good!)!  ;)  Also, Sluggy Freelance (sluggy.com) is fun to read.  And Kings of Chaos (kingsofchaos.com) is fun for whiling away 10 minutes or so a day.

Speaking of websites, I design them as a second job/hobby.  I work mostly in Macromedia products, and am the Photoshop queen!  ;)  I designed an independent movie's, my lab's, my drum corps', my husband's, and several of my own sites.  It's fun!

d. Movies and TV
I love sci-fi, and as far as movies go, the cheesier the better!  I've got almost every episode of MST3k on my computer, and a few on dvd.  My favorite?  Time of the Apes.  By far.  I also own several Godzilla movies, Gammera (Gammera is really neat, Gammera is made of meat, we are eating Gammera!), The Brain That Wouldn't Die, and Soylent Green to name a few of the cheesier ones.  My favorite movies of all time are Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and A Clockwork Orange.  I also have most of the Monty Python's Flying Circus episodes on my computer, and all of the Python movies.  As well as all of the Kevin Smith movies.  And I think Jeff Goldblum is extra ultra hot in Independence Day.   As far as tv goes, I watch Law and Order, SG-1, Family Guy, South Park, and that's about it.  Too much other fun stuff to do.

e. Games
Settlers of Catan is my all-time favorite board game, with Risk following it closely.  Lunch Money and Guillotine are my favorite card games.

I love video games.  Actually, I am wearing my Legend of Zelda track jacket right now.  I love all things Zelda, and own an Xbox, GameCube, Dreamcast, N64, and a GameBoy.  I am the sniper whore in Halo.  I am wicked with Kilik in Soul Caliber II.  And my dirty little secret (shhhh!) is that I own, and have beaten, Conker's Bad Fur Day for N64.

f. Books
I love to read.  Douglas Adams was the man, and I miss him.  I learned everything I know from H2G2.  I also am in the middle of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series.  Luckily, I will probably have enough time to finish it before the next book comes out (ha ha).

3. A brief educational history.
GPA???  Ummmm, it's been 5 years since I got out of college, and 9 since high school.  Hmmmm...  I was somewhere around a 3.0 GPA in college, and a B+/A- in high school.  I got a 1380 on the SAT (740 math, 640 verbal), a 5 on the AP Bio exam, a 4 on the AP Chem exam, a 4 on the English literature exam, and a 3 on the English Language exam (whoops!).  I got a 750 on the chemistry SAT subject exam.  And I got somewhere around the same scores on the GRE as I did on the SAT.

As far as high school went, I was in the National Honor Society, French Honor Society, the marching band, concert band, jazz band, and winter guard.  I got honors or high honors every semester.  My favorite classes were chemistry and bio (dissected a cat!).

College?  I was on the Dean's List, and was in the Orchestra and the Pep Band.  I helped found RPI's Chemistry Club.  I got my degree in Biochemistry/Biophysics as I think I mentioned already. ;)

4. How much time do I spend on the net?
It would be easier to ask me how much time I don't spend on the net, which is when I'm sleeping, eating, showering, or in the car.

5. Other nerdy tidbits that make you unique or make you feel nerdy among your peers.
Hmmm... stuff that makes me unique?  Well, I have some (relatviely) unusual pets.  My kitty is named Trillian, my two White's tree frogs are named Ford and Arthur.  I had a newt named Marvin that died in December.  And yes, they were all named after H2G2.  My gecko is named Zoe.  My chinchilla, Torg (from Sluggy.com, of course) died a couple years ago on 4th of July.   I also had 2 ferrets for a time, but gave them away when I had to move.

Oh yeah, I have a husband too...  hehe!  His name is Jay, and we got married in September of 2003.  He has a lot of patience for the nerdiness in me, seeing as he is not a nerd himself.  When I talk about work or computers or anything else he doesn't understand, he just nods and smiles.  ;)

Ummmm, I knocked my front tooth out in high school while practicing a flag routine for winter guard.  How much nerdier can you get than that?!?

I memorized the entire script to Monty Python and the Holy Grail in high school.  I used to wear my friend Sherry's mom's clothes from the 70s to school on a dare (think sea green sweater vest and powder blue hip-hugging bell-bottoms with white snowflakes on them).

OK, enough of that.  I tend to get carried away when I write, sorry to strain your eyes!   Anyway, I think you'll agree with me that this is the resume of a nerd.  ;)  If you want to know anything else, I'm all ears!
