What a silly argument. "Without technology there would be no art!" my ass. We'll just ignore things like, say, ancient cave paintings, or the fact that the ancient Greeks referred to art and technology with the same word.

I don't know this for a fact, but would be willing to bet Ayn Rand's novels (surely a form of ART) have introduced more people to her philosophy than her purely theoretical writings ever did--an idea that seems to have eluded Captain Objectivism, Master of All Motive Power over there. But maybe making art doesn't count as a form of production? >:-(
I understand that people at an engineering school could, and arguably should, get aerated about money being diverted from engineering programs to arts programs. Every college doesn't need to be all things to all people. However, it's a hella long leap from there to filing all the liberal arts under "crap." Isn't there room in the world for nerds of all stripes?
Anyone needs me, I'll be over here clutching my English degree and a Beretta.
I'm an engineer by trade and training, but I do spend a hell of a lot of time on things that are complete wastes of time by engineering standards. So I don't really know what to think, and I'm glad that I'm not required to furnish an opinion.
My opinion would be incomplete, anyway... I don't want to make one until I know where the balance currently sits. If RPI is overemphasizing engineering, then on one hand, it's a blow to specialization, but on the other, that may not be a bad thing (gotta love those complimentary studies electives, huh). But the near-polar opinions that are being furnished scare me a bit.
I guess I'm glad I'm mostly done with my formal education.
