I hate seeing from the different perspectives there are. When am I to be an idealist? When am I to be a realist? When can I combine the two and when am I "damned if I do, damned if I don't"? I wish there were a guide to this stuff

Well. I guess there isn't a guide as to what perspective you see things in. You seem to be in a conundrum. Well, I guess the best thing I can tell you is that it takes a long time to figure out a belief system that works for you, and even if it doesn't impact the rest of the world, at least you'll know what you believe. Or maybe it will [impact the rest of the world]. Who's to say, mm? Don't stress over stuff like this. How old are we? 18? You've got plenty of time to decide if you can even take a side.

So, I guess this wasn't really that helpful or all that related to the topic, but whatever. I love you. :)
