It would be helpful if Livejournal told you when other people add you as a friend. Just realised that someone I met ages ago friended me and I didn't notice. I would have added them back immediately if I had. Oops ( Read more... )

An old workaround to the lack of notifications is using a client like Semagic, which keeps a history of friend/friend-of changes. You do still need to manually update it (by clicking a button somewhere), but it'll tell you what's changed since last time.

I've only used locked posts a few times: for things which are only meant for a couple of people (they tend to be mundane, like "hey your parcel's arrived"), or things that make no sense if you don't have a LJ account (like the storyteller script I wrote last november - it relied on the http referrer being someone's LJ friends page). I can certainly see the attraction of them, though it does suffer from LiveJournal's overloading of "I want to see these journals on my friends page" and "I want these people to be able to see my posts".
