Time: August 21st
Location: Une's Office, Preventer's HQ
Characters: Lady Une, Chang Wufei

Another day, another disaster. After two years of gradually increasing threat it had begun to seem common place for everything to be in a constant state of disorder. She'd even gotten used to running on two hours of sleep again, though at her age such a thing should have been draining--despite the level of physical health Lady Une enforced upon herself.

For now she leaned an elbow upon the desk and contemplated the bottle of Tylenol in her upper desk drawer. Migraines were her one true problem of late, and she had to be careful how much and how often she medicated herself; the woman knew the only true cure for them would be to remove the source of stress, but that wasn't liable to happen. Today her self control faltered and she pulled the drawer open, finding the appropriate bottle immediately, and had soon downed four tablets along with half her glass of water. She put the bottle back and finally returned her wandering attention to the papers laying upon her desk.

Chang Wufei's file was a rather large one, filled with as many complimentary things as complaints filed against him. Had the Preventer's been staffed the way they should have been she might have been forced to call him in for a serious review by now. But they weren't even minimally staffed, much less fully, and thus he was allowed a good deal more leash than many in the forces, including herself, were entirely comfortable with. And now she was in the position of giving him more.

Sable eyes flickered to the clock on her wall and Une gave a small noise of irritation. It wasn't often that Chang was late, but he was pushing it precariously close today. Luckily she hadn't counted on his being early, as she occasionally did, and thus there still remained some leeway in this unaccustomed hole in her schedule.

Une flipped half-heartedly through the papers once again, then pushed herself back from the desk with a sigh. There were things she should be working on, but for the moment it felt rather good to merely close her eyes.

Wufei knocked on Lady Une's door, a bare few minutes early and already annoyed by that. He let himself in without waiting for a response and came smartly to attention before her desk. "Preventer Change, reporting as ordered," he said formally. He half expected her to call him to task over some trivial this or that. Either that, or she had some actual good news for him.

Lady Une's eyes snapped open at the knock, but she'd barely moved before Wufei had charged in. She couldn't help but be a trifle annoyed at that--what if she'd had someone in here? "Preventer Chang, I've told you time and time again to wait before entering this office..." It was pointless, but she'd correct him anyway. The woman sat up and riffled through the papers on her desk, "Have a seat, Chang."

Wufei nodded and took his seat without a word. At least it wasn't in trouble; he usually got a dressing down at the position of attention.

"Firstly you nearly got yet another fledgling agent to quit. I'm not sure whether to commend you or condemn you for this... unique skill of yours, but I do wish you'd stop making the privates piss themselves."

"If they had the courage and will to make it as a Preventer, they wouldn't be afraid of me. Better I scare them than the enemy." Wufei couldn't quite remember which rookie she was talking about, since it was pretty common occurrence. Unless someone actually did quit, they didn't stick out in his mind. "But that's not the reason you called me in here?"

"I'm glad they weren't sent out in the field, but that doesn't mean we can't use them in the office, which we're doing. My secretaries do not need to be sent home to change their underwear." Most people assumed that Une didn't have a sense of humor as she rarely smiled and certainly didn't laugh at her own jokes, but the humor was there nonetheless for those that knew where to look for it. "And no, it isn't." She picked up another, thinner, manila folder and handed it to him, "I have a field assignment for you.

"Intelligence gathering, only. Its about time we started working on your patience levels, and unfortunately for you, you're the only able-bodied preventer not currently on assignment."

"My patience levels are fine," he assured her in an off-hand tone while going through the file. "And I do know how to handle a reconnaissance mission. I don't see why this is unfortunate, for me or anyone else." Wufei, for his part, did not have a sense of humor and so missed any joke in Une's words. "Is everything in here? Will I be working with a partner?"

"You're going alone, and the patience comes in when I tell you that you are NOT to attempt taking out the mark by yourself, you are only given sanction to do damage if it is an absolute must, and you are not to sabotage anything going on there." Lady Une fixed him with her most practiced look of 'you will do as I say or regret it.' "And yes, everything is there. The base, or what we assume is the base, is located in Chile, mostly drugs though there have been reports of potential mobile suit parts being shipped in from salvage yards that are still working on the cleanup in space. What we need you to get, as you'll see on page five, is documented proof of the weaponry from their own files as well as a camera you can pick up from basic supply. Your transport route is in the back as well as tickets and a projected expense account, though you have access to whatever you need. I expect you to have a report on the mission on my desk within forty-eight hours of your return, and if the mission goes over three days a mid-mission brief via email of vid-phone."

"This won't take more than three days," he said, a little annoyed at the repeat of protocol. Why people thought he had to be told three times over what was written right in front of him, he'd never understand. He snapped the folder closed and stood, tucking it under one arm. "If that's all, I'll leave right away."

Lady Une gave a curt nod, "As you say, Chang. Good luck." She picked up another folder, then, that she would need for her next meeting. Her medication was starting to kick in now, slowly easing the dull throb between her temples--so much that she either didn't notice, or didn't care what that Chang was annoyed.
