Well. One grad school rejection letter down, two to go. I don't know whether to be glad UNC didn't leave me in suspense until March, or thoroughly discouraged that they managed to decide against me so promptly ( Read more... )

I do my best to just ignore its existence, though this was difficult last year when I worked in a restaurant. All the stressed out couples who are indignant because they want a "special, romantic" dinner and it did not occur to them to make reservations.

"Yes, we want something romantic and special just like they're having! We want this to be something we'll remember for the rest of our lives, so make it happen for us!"

God, I would not want to work in the restaurant industry that day to save my life!

It's far worse than any other holiday - because on say, Christmas or New Years or Thanksgiving, people are a)frequently prepared for the long waits, and b) inclined to tip generously because they recognize that it sucks for you to be working on a holiday. On Valentine's Day pretty much everyone is neurotic and self-involved to the point of megalomania ( ... )

I know of other people who got turned down from "easier" schools and yet got into Berkeley...

Don't count it out yet.

heh heh, UW accepted me and far "worse" schools rejected me. so it's all a matter of timing. :> which school has someone who wants someone like you at the time you're applying...

i kinda think of valentines as, like, a birthday or MLKJ day celebration thing. for your birthday, you *could* throw a huge party, or you could ignore it. for MLKJ day you *could* go out and be socially active or whatever, or not if you don't wanna. it's like, valentines is a reason to celebrate, and i always like reasons to celebrate! but i'd be just as happy to celebrate with close friends as with a lover(s).

heh heh, my dad used to say that any reason to celebrate is a good reason. i don't think valentines should be thought of as The Day to "show someone you care" or any of that bullshit, cause if you care you should show it all the time. =P but it's as good a reason as any to get dressed up or throw a party or something, hehe. =)

which reminds me i need to switch my icon to my valentines day/spring icon, hehe

And I understand that MLK day is also supposed to be a "service to others" day, like volunteering and such. Making Valentine's day into a more generalized service to one's community would probably really elevate the sentiment of caring for others.

Or just have some ice cream. It is--as they say--all good.

And I now dub this icon "The Valentine."

I think my experience in food service has permanently obliterated my ability to see Valentine's Day as anything other than a celebration of commercialized romance, perpetuated by self-involved and insecure couples who feel the need to demonstrate to everyone how in love they are. If it was in any way supportive of the idea of caring for others and demonstrating your caring, or even if it was less in-your-face with its gushy pinkness, I'd be way more okay with it.

If it makes you feel any better, UNC rejected me in 83 for an undergrad degree and again in 94 for a graduate degree.

The Ironic thing was that in 83, I was accepted by U of IL and didn't go in favor of going to VA Tech instead, (forestry major). Then just over 10 years later the U of I accepted me for a graduate program.

Hang in there. It's more about you enjoying where you are going to school than the school itself.

Mostly, yes, although it does matter to me that I'm at a school that's interested in the areas I want to pursue in cultural anthropology. Plus, now I'm wondering what I'm going to do if I don't get in *anywhere*. I suppse the answer is wait a year and try again, and build some connections with professors in the meantime, but I'm itchy to start. Right now i feel like I'm just sort of stalling.

I work for a college publishing company and I'm about to get rid of a bunch of Cultural Anthro books if you want them. All 2006 Copyrights or thereabouts.

And hey, I finished my graduate classes 12 years ago and have yet to finish my thesis. That's stalling.

ooh, what books? I am definitely interested.

Heh, I know so many people for whom that seems to be the case. Theses just take a while sometimes...
