Without taking sides

The tradition of Armistice Day, and in particular the wearing of a poppy to honour it, is now almost a hundred years old.

How many other traditions as old as that which don't formally involve any religious or sectarian element are still capable of generating so much heat and light both for and against them?

Flying the Confederate flag in the US? Although probably the proportions of people for and against the act are the opposite of those for and against wearing the poppy.

I just moved to Canada from the states a couple years back, and this whole poppy wearing thing is new to me. In the states yesterday was Veteran's day, which is way more focused on patriotism rather than war. It also tends to pass by mostly unnoticed. Makes me wonder how it got that way.
