Taking his plate and leading May from the
Extra Cafe, Dax was surprised to find the Main Cafe completely empty. Quiet even, except for the din of conversation coming from the other room. Everyone was subdued, and even though everyone had given Dax a bit of support after what Ryan had said, he still felt that sinking weight in his chest, in his heart. Some of the kids were giving him looks that told him very plainly that they were afraid. He understood, he couldn't blame them, not after all that he knew now. Horrible.
Dax moved to the far end of the table, near the breakfast room, and set his plate down, moving to pull out the chair next to him for May. At least she still cared about him, she was so sweet, comforting, in her own way anyway, it would be nice to have a few moments of silence with her for a change. After everything now, he'd forgotten all about her sneaking off and everything he'd learned earlier today, he couldn't even think of it now, his mind was in a million places.
Without even thinking, his eyes kept trailing up to look down the corridor at the doorway that led to Salene and Ryan's room. Were they in there? Were they ok? Maybe Salene was still with Mouse. Did Ryan really still hate him, after everything? After all they'd gotten through this week, and the rescue, the militia, everything? It would haunt him for the rest of his life, he knew that better than anyone, he had just hoped the pain of being hated would wear off eventually.
Purposefully shifting his attention to May, Dax forced a tight smile, "So this is good," he finally commented, reaching out across the table to grab the pitcher of water and fill their cups. "I'm glad you're eating with me tonight, I've missed you today," he admitted, his smile more sincere, though still tight.
