Salene:Tucking Flower and Willow in

Apr 04, 2005 06:40

Salene left Flower and Willow in the back of the Extra Cafe, walking quickly past everyone as she headed for the stairs. Tears were stinging her eyes, the last thing she wanted was to let the girls see her cry over what they'd said. It wasn't their fault she was upset, they were children, they had said what was on their minds, and if there was ( Read more... )

Willow came down the stairs solemnly, she had almost forgotten that Salene would be in her room when she got there, and as she approached the door she slowed, putting her hands behind her back and leaning in the doorjam. Her back was too the doorway, and she was folding and unfolding and refolding the pajamas. Was she upset with Willow now? Chewing on her bottom lip, Willow watched for a few more moments before stepping into the room. Still unnoticed, she stood there, afraid, what would happen? If Salene was mad at her for what she'd said, would she punish her? "Uhhm," she finally got out, but it came in merely a whisper croak, forcing her to stop and clear her throat.

"I, I like those pajamas, they ...have turtles," she told her quietly, walking up to the bed and tracing one of the turtles on the pants with her finger. "They were here, in the room I mean, when I moved in. Did, you pick them out?" She couldn't look up at Salene, and her heart was pounding in her ears now, so afraid.

Salene was startled by the clearing throat, and she glanced over her shoulder, glad to see Willow. She walked in and spoke of the pajamas, and Salene couldn't help but sniffle, she had been about to before she walked in, it was becoming a habit at this point. "Oh, well no, but I was there. Ryan and I, we walked through the closet in the office complex, he found them. Said you liked turtles, he wasn't sure you'd like pink, but I told him if you loved turtles the pink would hardly be noticeable," she gave her a lopsided smile that melted away into a firm line ( ... )

"No," Willow stopped her, grasping the hand that she was still holding, "I'd, I mean, if you don't mind, I'd like help brushing my hair. It's so long and, and Anna did it, and I wouldn't know how to take it down," she told her honestly. She felt shy, meek, about this, unsure of what to say, what was right and wrong, what to do. "If, if you just sit here, I'll change," Willow picked up the pajamas and turned around, waiting silently for Salene to unzip her dress before walking around the large bed and quickly changing into the pajama set ( ... )

Salene looked up as Willow said no, wondering what she was about to protest. A wave of relief washed through Salene as she said she'd appreciate the help with her hair, and Salene simply nodded, a happier smile replacing the look on her face, broadening to a real smile. She kept her part of the bargain and, after unzipping the dress for her, waited as Willow changed behind her ( ... )

The realization came easily and quickly, but she didn't know how to explain what was going on, how to describe it and sooth her fears. Salene knew she needed to get a bed pad for her for tonight, and a cloth, but how did she explain this? It was, well it was a Mother's job, and Salene guessed she was the Mother, but really? She couldn't even remember explaining this to Cloe and Patsy, had she? Had Amber? Salene's mouth opened and closed a few times, and before she could get a word out, Flower bounced into the room, declaring that Willow had been a grouch all day ( ... )
