My experience with US flag carriers is that they are even more ridiculous than everyone else about the security theatre. For that reason, I'd tend to go BA not AA.

Knowing what Brit customer service is like, go AA all the way!

Never flown AA, but I have had reasonable experiences with BA (most recently their managing to dig out some vegetarian food for me when they'd not been told I was vegetarian because of the UTTER BLOODY INCOMPETENT who'd made the booking, but that's a whole 'nother rant).

How do I find out what plane I'll be on? (I've only ever been to the US once and it was on a military troop carrier - DC10 which was an 'interesting' experience!

The info on the website for that particular flight might contain the make/type of aircraft.

If BA you'll probably be on a 747... I'm actually going there on a 747 this coming Saturday. If you choose BA and are going business class try to get a Club World seat on the upper deck, it's a much nicer environment than downstairs.

Of course I'm biased when it comes to BA's service, cuz, y'know, it's me, but there is the strike issue. The strike result will be announced probably a short time after the ballot closes in a few days on the 21st. I can't actually advise on which way the ballot is likely to go as, from talking to colleagues, opinion seems to be pretty much 50/50 for and against.
