The point of having a nice big section is that everyone behind the front two desks can pretend to play during the really hard bits.Quite right. I used to be front desk second violin (note - only seconds for the puny school orchestra, so that will give you an idea of My Pathetic Musical Qualities) and the school never trusted me enough to play properly during concerts, so they always got music teachers to sit in front of me
( ... )
OOps, I meant me, not him, as in my violin teacher didn't want to sit next to me (why she'd want to sit next to the conductor would be a mystery indeed.)
On the other hand, at least you don't get the ever-so-funny comments from people that you get on public transport ("do you have a body in there?"; "I bet you wish you played the flute" etc.)
Douglas Adams wrote something similar, about how he (the character in the book, I guess) had a friend who played the double bass, and everywhere he went people said, 'I bet you wish you played the piccolo, huh?' and it drove him crazy because no one had yet realised that that's what everyone else said.
There you go, nice bit of useless knowledge for you ;)
I know exactly what he means - everyone thinks that he's (it is overwhelmingly 'he') being incredibly original and comic. I play the piano as well.
Ooh and I forgot to mention, I bought the Elgar Cello Concerto today - it is the most wonderfullest thing I've ever played. With a piano arrangement, which I am going to INSIST Ching learn in Oxtober so it can be played properly.
I told you, I will learn the Elgar Cello Concerto; but the Pathétique is priority. My teacher and I both agree that Rachmaninov is a BAD idea (well most Rachmaninov anyway)(Marfan's and all)- but his Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini is so gorgeous. Oh well.
12 cello parts is terrible! How many does one need! After all, it's only the cello ;) You should know all the German notation anyway; I remember having to know them for Grade 5 Theory. *says she whose German notation is now limited to Langsam and Schnell* My French notation is excellent, though ;)
Lies! LOL- yeah, we were discussing music and piano; and you said that since I started before you I should be better- and yet you play both piano and cello to Grade 8; while I only have the piano. So I argued that my hands make up for it.
