JT was stabbed, not shot. and the circumstances were different. circumstances were different with paige and darcy, darcy and emma, manny and liberty.

and i think that each storyline wasnt exactly the same and was handled differently by different characters, the point was probably to show how similar situations have multiple ways of dealing with them. plus, i mean, in one school, more than one person is bound to get pregnant or an std.

IAWTC.

What I don't get is how the characters treat certain actions as a deal-breaker, and then ignore very similar or worse actions.

For example, Manny broke up with Spinner because he basically triggered Rick into going on a shooting rampage, not ending well for Jimmy. Shortly thereafter she got engaged and then fell in love with the guy who colluded with Spinner on this same event. She's also conveniently forgotten the guy also gave her best friend a "social disease". Really, Manny?

I'm thinking she didn't find out Jay was involved as well.

I hear you on the musical relationships. And then there's Toby who has been completely left out of that game, but that's not unrealistic. Lots of geeks don't date in h.s.

There are common themes in play, but we are watching the same tiny fictional school over time. New kids, similar problems, lots of drama. Each situation is new for the character(s) going through it.

I think it's not just creativity (or lack thereof), it's also to prevent any one character from being a token, as in "the one who got raped", "the one who got pregnant", "the one who got shot"... etc., and make them multi-dimensional.

Personally, what stands out to me is how the characters' STDs magically disappear after whatever episode they acquired them. Emma, Jay, Alex, Darcy (possibly Peter), Paige... the exception being Griffin, who was born HIV positive.

And let's not forget that KC and Clare are the new Emma and Sean. KC is a bad boy who stole cars and lives in a group home, and Sean was a bad boy as well. Clare is is the studious activist, who stood up for Connor and his disability, just the way Emnma stood up for removing GM foods from the school caf. It's going to be Season 9 this fall, they really are running out of ideas!

I totally get what you're saying but think of how many seasons there are of Degrassi? It's bound to redo topics at some point or another. Luckily they're not exactly the same, usually they're under different circumstances. Usually
I think they should do eating disorders again though, because Emma's 2 episodes anorexia[or buliama, now I can't remember] was way too shortlived.

And cancer showing up more than once is definately believable. I've had 3 instances of cancer in my life, amongst my small group of friends. And that's not counting parents..

I've noticed this too, but I think they try to make it a little different for new characters (e.g. Darcy was raped by somebody unknown and dealt with it differently than Paige). And it's bound to happen since there's so many episodes. I think some plots are even recycled from the very old Degrassi.

I think sometimes the plots are thought of as individual episodes that deal with topics instead of looking at the bigger picture (like that every one in Degrassi has dated each other, all these things are happening to the same school, etc.). They want to cover a lot of topics and show what people are going through... even if it's not completely realistic that all this would happen at the same school.

I don't know, I still wish they tried to think of new plots though. I like how sometimes, they'll have a topic more unique - like Connor having Asperger's.
