She got an email. An email that gave an address and a time so she could see him and he could see the baby. Their beautiful three month old son. They hadn’t talked for a while, since Joshua was born. She missed him so much it almost hurt.
Annie sat in the run down diner just outside the Washington, DC limits holding her son as he fed from her breast. She gazed at his perfect, chunky face which was accented with bright, expressive eyes.
Josh strolled in, relieved that no one would really care that he was there since he was dressed casually in jeans and a sweater. His eye caught on Annie right away, her bright red toned hair mostly, which was pulled behind her head with a black rubber band. He walked closer, stopping when he saw what she was doing and turned around, "You are not feeding that thing where there are people…" He paused, "Are you?"
"No one puts a sheet over your head when you eat, why should he have one?" Annie quipped back, she was actually almost finished.
He sat down, keeping his head from looking at her, "Did you have to bring it at all?"
"He’s isn’t a thing, he’s my son. I thought his father was coming to see him… Imagine my disappointment when I saw that it was you." She picked the babe up and put him over her shoulder, patting his back to burp him after she recovered her chest, "You can look now."
"Yeah, About that…" Josh nodded, looking back at her.
"About looking at me?"
"About him with his father…"
She swallowed as she looked back up at Josh, "Well… What are you talking about?"
"The baby… You can’t bring him around here anymore."
She nearly stopped breathing when she heard him talk, "What?" She wasn’t even sure she heard him right.
"You need to keep that baby away."
Annie dared herself not to cry in the restaurant, but her eyes pooled with the salty water, "You can’t be… I should call him then…"
"You can’t do that neither. We don’t need your phone number showing up on the phone records with the press snooping around. You need to cut off all ties right now."
"They already know we’re together, Josh-" She did her best not to cry, but the fear for both her son and herself, as well as the sadness, came together and made tears trickle down her picturesque, pink cheeks. Her chin trembled, making it difficult for her to speak clearly, "You’re telling me that my… My Sam can’t see his son… your godson anymore?"
He took a few minutes to answer. It pained him that he was making her cry, and it hurt him severely that he had to hurt Sam that way as well, "Look, I hate to be the one to tell you any of this, but Sam has the war with Cuba and everything under his belt, he doesn’t need to-" He stopped himself.
"Worry about his son?" She asked quietly.
Josh swallowed, then looked up at her, "You honestly think he wants to?"
Annie began to pack the infant’s things up at a steady pace, holding Joshua still very close. She picked the bags up slowly, yet hustling out of the establishment.
He chased after her, "Annie-" He touched her arm gently.
"Get the fuck off of me." She pulled away from him quickly, her face a mix of crimson and wetness, "I’ve never been that embarrassed in my entire life, Josh." She wouldn’t look at him, she couldn’t.
"Wait until after reelection, anyone expect something and it’s finished… all that work down the drain-"
"Josh-" She almost warned.
"It’s about politics, Annie. You understand."
She turned quickly on her heel, "Fuck the politics!" She blurted out, nearly screaming at him, attempting to catch her breath.
"There can’t be any trace that he’d care."
"What happened to your heart, Josh… Was that lost in the politics too?"
All he could do was look at her, gaping like a fish.
Annie bounced Joshua gently to keep him calm, she felt him pick his fist up to his mouth to suck on it, "That’s what I thought." She whispered. Putting the baby in the car, giving him a pacifier. She looked back up at Josh after she closed the door. She was calmer, but tears were still in her eyes, "Tell Sam all he had to do was tell me that he didn’t want me… He didn’t have to send one of his cronies to do his dirty work." She swallowed and walked around to the driver side, pulling off.
"It’s about the politics." Josh whispered, well after she drove out of sight. He turned and walked back to his vehicle, he wasted too much time as it was.
