Glamdring

It suddenly occurred to me in my umptieth time of rewatching The Fellowship of the Ring that Gandalf's sword should also have been glowing in Moria (among other places). Sting was not the only elven-made weapon in the room. Glamdring was made in Gondolin and carried by Turgon. How the trolls ended up with it ( Read more... )

Maybe Thorin was tall for a Dwarf and Tolkien forgot to tell us?

Tolkien? Forget a detail? :-D

Though this reminds me of the dwarven D&D character my husband used to play. Tonk was around 6' tall (and about 4' wide).

I had forgotten that Glamdring also glowed.

As for Thorin- maybe he fought 'hand and a half' style with it- as a smaller person, I sometimes do that with in SCA style combat.

Ah...an excellent point. Being not a weapons person (except in D&D, which hardly counts!), I did not think of that.

Bilbo has sword made in Gondoline too, maybe Torin used short elven-sword.

Yes, Sting is Bilbo's sword, which he gave to Frodo in Rivendell; it came from the same trollish hoard as Gandalf's sword Glamdring. Which is what I'm talking about -- Glamdring should also have been glowing.

Thorin's sword was the mate of Glamdring, which is why I was assuming it was a long sword. It may not have been, of course, but since it was famous enough among the goblins to have had a nickname, it would make more sense for it to have been a big, scary sword, rather than a long dagger, as Sting was.

You startled me! It's like we were all sitting quietly in this community and suddenly someone spoke up. I do like your question too, I should reread that book.
