We started off the day with an episode by episode discussion of season 7. It says something about the season that I had to open my laptop and read my own reviews of the episodes to remind myself what they were about. It just wasn't a memorable season overall. There were maybe four episodes I didn't need prompting for.
We followed that up with the annual script-to-screen panel where we read an act from the shooting script, then watch that act on DVD to compare similarities and differences. This year, we did "Playthings," which is one of my favorite episodes from season 2. I think it also had the fewest speaking parts of any script we've done. It was so nostalgic watching the episode, though. The boys looked so young! And I miss the amulet and the good-natured brother teasing that wasn't loaded down with 16 tons of emotional baggage. It was also nice to see Sam & Dean relying on their own knowledge, experience, and research, instead of having to call people to infodump the episode's plot to them all the time.
I don't usually mention the lunch break because I usually just go home for lunch, but we're in Madison this year, and I don't know my way around here. Thanks to
queeberquabbler driving, I didn't have to spend my lunch break eating food from the hotel convenience store. I also got to have lunch with
asyouleft (who is still berating me for not attending enough cons this year to hang out with her),
wilde_moon,
alcorandmizar, and
cerulean_aurora.
After lunch, we had a panel on the history of crossroad demons in folklore and on the show, followed by a panel discussing what we know of the Winchesters pre-series in as much order as it can be put in. Sometimes the references to what the boys were up to hang together surprisingly well, while at other times they result in gaping continuity flaws when you try to put them in a timeline.
We then had an arts and crafts panel in which we attempted to make show-related bracelets. We basically found out that some of us are craftier than others, and that most of us can't follow diagrams on how to tie knots. I did end up with an actual completed bracelet though, so I'll call that a win. This is the only con I've ever been to that does crafts, and I have to say that I still love it, even when I'm massively failing at it and need to be bailed out.
The last panel of the day was on fan fic. We started out with general 'thou shalt not' guidelines, then moved on to our own personal pet peeves. We had 10 minutes to kill at the end, so I read aloud from my fic blooper collection on my laptop. There's currently a movie marathon going on downstairs, but I've seen most of the movies, so I'm taking this opportunity to catch up on my flist.
