My day at the office yesterday concluded when I left early in frustration after being unable to fully track down the source of what can only be described as a ghost ip address.

Orphaned ESX cluster host? I could see it if one of your cluster hosts were orphaned and the cluster spun up a new instance of it one one of the other hosts.
