(fade it and out several times, as if waking up. Everything is cream colored. The camera is first staring at the ceiling, then pans down and out to show the driver. His nos is clearly broken, and there are bandages around his head. A stately older gentleman is looking down at him from behind a clipboard. A comely nurse does room-tending stuff in the background.)
Dr. Waters: Good afternoon. Do you know where you are?
Stranger: A hospital? What happened? (seems slightly puzzled)
Waters: You were in a bad auto accident. Do you know your name?
Stranger: John Edward Stranger. Born October 13, 1980 in Fayetteville, North Carolina. What happpened?
(Waters makes a not on his clipboard)
Waters: We were hoping you could tells us. Do you remember anything?
(Stranger closes his eyes, thinking. There is a flash of the sign from the prologue (Mercy:4 Hope: 8), then a white flash. He shakes his head)
Stranger: I swerved to avoid something. Someone, I think. I ... I lost control. Then ... I don't remember. It's fuzzy and it hurts.
Waters (making another note): I see. That's not unexpected, given your injuries and head trauma. Had you been drinking? Were you under the influence of any drugs?
Stranger (shaking head): No. Dead sober. Where am I?
Waters: Forgive me. I'm Doctor Alexander Waters. you're at the Hope and Mercy Hospital, just between the cities of Hope and Mercy. Do you know where they are?
Stranger: Approximately. I passed a few signs. (flash to signs from fifteen miles closing to last sign seen)
Waters: Okay then. You've been unconscious since they brought yohu in yesterday morning, in the wee hours. The sheriff would liek to speak with you, and he;ll mknow what happened to your vehicle. Technically, after he sees you, you're free to go. However, as a physician, I must recommend you stay here tonight for observation. How do you feel?
Stranger: Head hurts, and I'm hungry. Not too bad otherwise. How bad am I banged up?
Waters: Not much, actually. You were lucky. Probably concussion from when I think your head hit the window. We think the air bag broke your nose. Surprisingly, only minor bruises other than that.
Stranger: Okay. I'll stay another night. Can I see the sheriff tomorrow, and get some food now?
(fade out)
