I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about baseball, and a somewhat knowledgeable about fine art, but I couldn't place the reference, "Brace", at all. So I did a bit of research and there was a rather mediocre baseball player named George Brace, who spent a couple of years in the Major leagues. Well even though he was a failure as a professional baseball player, that didn't change his love for the sport, so apparently he became a photographer, and then was able to continue being around baseball as a photographer.
I couldn't find that specific photo, but I do know Roger Maris wore #9 on his jersey and that 1961, the year before the painting was finished, Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's home run record, so you can extrapolate on the symbolism of all that.
thank you so very much for your answer! this is very interesing for me because I try to understand how Rauschenberg works. I'll try to find the original photo b Brace. Maybe it is somewhere in the www! have a nice day!
