Our local Penny Market (I think it is actually called a Pfennig Markt) sells these delicious soft German cookies that are filled with orange flavoured goo (jam?), and topped with a thin layer of chocolate. I think my dad and Leonor might have brought the same ones home from Portugal last year. Anyway, they're delicious. And I love their English

that is awesome. i actually have some pfennigs! german cookies are the bomb, my oma makes really good kipfuls, which are like little crescent cookie rolls with apricot jam inside. and usually sugar on top. very tasty.
P.S. i'm totally jealous that there are no chocolate festivals in ontario... yet we can have maple syrup festivals. things need to change!

Those kipfuls sound so delicious. I have a friend from Switzerland who was in my italian class, and just before Christmas her mom came to visit and made something like what you described and I thought I had died and gone to heaven.
I don't think I truly appreciated maple syrup until I left, and didn't have any here. They sell it at the grocery store (all Canadian of course!) but it is so expensive you're practically selling your soul. So I brought some back from Canada with me. Lesson learned: if you ever move to another country bring syrup
