Character Information

General
Canon Source: Bleach
Canon Format: Animanga
Character's Name: Yachiru Kusajishi
Character's Age: ??? No idea. She looks to be a little girl, but she is probably much older than that, since Shinigami are weird that way.
Conditional: Although Yachiru looks and acts like a little girl, it’s quite possible that she’s much older than she seems. However, she is a shinigami - and not only a shinigami, but the vice-captain of the most bloodthirsty division in the Gotei 13. I doubt there is much of anything that Yachiru hasn’t seen. However, she probably won’t need to find a way to survive on her own, since Kenpachi Zaraki (her unofficial adopted father) is here. She will most likely be staying with him.

What form will your character's NV take? This Phone

Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities: Yachiru is capable of emitting a large amount of reiatsu (spiritual power) when she is angry, which seems to form into a large (pink in the anime) angry cat face which snaps at the person she is annoyed at. It isn’t stated whether or not this is an actual attack, or just a way of her showing her annoyance. As well, she is also shown to suffer no ill effects from the well-known heavy spiritual pressure of Kenpachi Zaraki.
She is physically strong enough to lift Kenpachi easily, even though he is much larger than she is, and she is capable of carrying him while leaping from building to building. Yachiru is the vice-captain of the Eleventh Division, which is known among the Gotei 13 for it’s fighting abilities, which should say something else about her strength. Grown men in her division have been shown to be afraid of her, and Matsumoto Rangiku was able to frighten Madarame Ikkaku quite badly by just threatening to tell Yachiru that he was misbehaving.
Yachiru is shown (in some of the Omakes at the end of Anime episodes, as well as in some omake manga panels) to be quite the expert at infiltration. She (with the help of Nemu Kurotsuchi) has built many secret tunnels and hidden doors in Byakuya Kuchiki’s mansion. She was also able to sneak past Byakuya’s guards and other security measures in order to steal the koi from his pond.
She’s also incredibly fast without the use of shunpo (flash step - shinigami way of running super fast/teleporting), running from the ground level of Seireitei to the Soukyoku Hill in a fairly short period of time. The exact distance of this run isn’t really known, but it is quite a long way for such a little girl. In the Zanpakutou Tales filler episodes, she is seen using shunpo. However, many in the Eleventh Division can use shunpo, but choose not to. So she probably won’t be using it that much.
Unlike her captain, Yachiru has displayed some skills at detecting and analyzing reiatsu (spiritual pressure). She was able to find Inoue Orihime and deduce that she was a Ryoka (intruder) by comparing her reiatsu and Ichigo Kurosaki’s.
It should probably also be mentioned that Yachiru is capable of putting away a vast amount of sweets in a short period of time.

Conditional: N/A

Weapons: Her zanpakutou. (Soul Cutter) It has not been named yet in her canon, nor are there any known abilities for it. Unlike most shinigami, she carries it with a loose cord, rather than wear it in the obi of her uniform. The scabbard has been ‘modified’, thanks to Ikkaku’s carpentry skills and her persistence in bothering him, with a set of wheels at the bottom, so that it will not drag along the ground. The hilt-guard, or tsuba, is shaped like a flower.

History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History: (If you scroll up a bit, you’ll find her pre-canon history too)
Point in Canon: Although it isn’t known exactly where Yachiru is during Kenpachi and Byakuya’s battle with the Cero Espada Yammi Rialgo, she is somewhere in Las Noches at the time. Knowing her personality, Yachiru was probably hidden away in some hidey-hole, watching her two favourite men as they fought against Yammizilla. The manga didn’t go into great detail about that fight, though, and the next time we see her, she’s riding a victorious Kenpachi back into Soul Society, just as cheerful and excitable as always. This is where I am taking her from.
Conditional: N/A

Character Personality: Most people don’t seem to realise it, but the majority of sweet little girls can actually be little monsters if the conditions are correct. Kusajishi Yachiru is no exception to this rule. Although for the most part she’s is a cheerful, energetic and easy going little girl, there are times when she’s downright terrifying. Although it’s never stated why she’s so frightening at these times, it seems that just the mention of being reported to Yachiru is enough to scare Madarame Ikkaku, a fearsome man in his own right, into correcting his bad behaviour at the time.
One of the ways to get on her bad side is to criticize her. She resents this very much and will attack anyone who dares to say anything bad about her. She also doesn’t like to be disturbed when she’s watching Kenpachi fight. A messenger tried his very best to tell her an important message, but she snaps at him to “leave her alone!” and summons a large cloud of reiatsu in the shape of an angry cat-face. This makes the messenger leave her alone so that she can watch Kenpachi and Ichigo fighting in peace.
However, despite her childish and sometimes terrifying ways (or perhaps because of them), Yachiru seems to be in a very high position of power in the organizations she is in. She is the Vice Captain of the Eleventh Division, and although it could be argued that she only got the position because of her relationship with Zaraki Kenpachi, the current captain of that division, sometimes it seems otherwise. After all, she does have her own zanpakutou and is recognized by others as a legitimate shinigami. This is not the only high-ranking position she has. She is also president of the Shinigami Women’s Association.
But she doesn’t seem to take these positions seriously. She’s never shown to be doing any actual work in the Eleventh division, instead running off to play once Kenpachi is taking his afternoon nap. And she uses the Shinigami Women’s Association as little more than a way to amuse herself. She uses the funds for the association to buy candy and toys for herself and sends the much older women on tasks that seem to exist purely for her amusement.
But the Shinigami’s Women Association isn’t Yachiru’s only way of spending her free time. She is also seen attending the Captain Commander’s tea sessions, Captain Unohana’s flower arranging lessons and Captain Kuchiki’s Calligraphy Club… If only to eat the sweets and cakes served during the snack-times and disappear within seconds. Eating seems to be a favorite hobby of hers. She’s always extremely helpful whenever it seems like someone will be unable to finish her food, offering to help them finish it. She usually doesn’t wait for an answer, though.
Like most children from poor areas, Yachiru appears to be quite protective of her food, unwilling to share it with anyone. Well, almost anyone. Yachiru seems to have quite a little girl’s crush on Byakuya Kuchiki. She likes him so much that she not only offers to share her food with him, she offers to share her candy with him. She isn’t even seen offering Kenpachi any of her candy, ever. Of course, Byakuya refused to take her up on her offer, but the fact remains that she did offer.
But her crush doesn’t seem to exclude Byakuya from being tormented. In fact, it only seems to draw her attention to him even more than it might have if she didn’t like him as much as she did. She uses her infiltration skills to break into and, with the help of Kurotsuchi Nemu, dig elaborate tunnels and create secret rooms in Byakuya’s mansion. She uses these rooms for holding Shinigami Women’s Association meetings, and for hiding whatever treasures she might have.
Another important facet of Yachiru’s personality is her love for Kenpachi. In her own words: "I had no name. I had no parents. I was from the 79th District of North Rukongai, Kusajishi. I had never seen anything in colours other than bloody red. But then you appeared, from the 80th District of North Rukongai, Zaraki. Even deeper in the darkness. You demolished the chaotic world that was dyed in blood, then you gave me a name. If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't be here today. Since that day, you have been everything to me in this world."
Zaraki Kenpachi found Yachiru in the 79th district of North Rugonkai. It was the second worst of the districts, no place for an orphaned little girl. But unlike most children might have been, Yachiru was unafraid of the carnage she had just seen, and even less afraid of the vicious man who was the cause of all the violence. Even though the then-unnamed Kenpachi warns her that his sword is dangerous, she reaches out to touch the blood-soaked blade anyway. It seems to be this that endears her to Kenpachi, and he gives her a name (Kusajishi, for the district he found her in. Yachiru, for the only person he ever admired) and her soon to be customary place on his back.
They have been nearly inseparable ever since. Their relationship can best be described as that of a father-daughter pair, though they don’t seem to refer to each other with any familial terms and often bicker and blame each other for the slightest things, such as getting lost. (They get lost often, due to a pair of poor sense of direction and Kenpachi’s willingness to follow Yachiru’s finger when she points out a direction to run in.) She is like many other young girls who believe that their father (whether biological, adoptive, or unofficial) is the strongest man in the world. Even when Ichigo defeats Kenpachi, her faith in him never diminishes.
Even though Kenpachi is willing to accept his loss at the hands of the substitute Shinigami, Yachiru isn’t. She points out that Ichigo was fighting with his sword’s spirit, a fight that wasn’t really fair because it wasn’t one-on-one. After Kenpachi laughs off her attempt to justify his loss (and she smacks him for that), she does concede that Kenpachi needs to get stronger in order to defeat him and she promises that the two of them will ‘get stronger together!’
Even when she’s facing down an Espada bent on killing her (Nnoitra Gilga) after Kenpachi is briefly knocked out, she doesn’t worry. Inoue Orihime is extremely frightened and tries to protect Yachiru with her Shun-Shun-Rikka shield, but Yachiru is unfazed because she knows Kenpachi is too strong to be killed that easily, and that he will protect her. She even tries to help the unfortunate Arrancar by pointing out Kenpachi and warning Nnoitra that he should “Look out behind you,” and after Kenpachi severs one of Nnoitra’s arms, she scolds him with: “You should watch out! Ken-chan will get mad if you start attacking me!”. She trusts Kenpachi to protect her against his enemies, even if he denies it shortly after (“Who d’you think you’re callin’ mad?”).
However, it can be said that Yachiru’s life with Kenpachi has had a negative effect on her. She seems to be quite desensitized to most forms of violence. Although that is probably a necessary and good thing when you’re a shinigami, Yachiru is still just a little girl and her blasé attitude toward the amount of violence that goes on in the Eleventh Division is kind of worrying. Although she never really seemed to be bothered by violence, even when she was a little girl. As well, the men in the Eleventh Division can be quite crude and very rude. She never seems to scold anyone for swearing, but she certainly has heard a lot of obscenities in her short life. Although it’s never gone into in canon, I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s heard all sorts of sexual terms. So although she acts quite immature, she has probably seen more awful things than most young ladies her age. I doubt that there would be anything in those kinds of matters in Siren’s Port that could actually surprise her.

First Person Sample :

[Here’s the beaming face of a happy looking little girl, sitting in a snowy baseball field. Her cheeks have gone bright pink with the cold, but she doesn’t seem to mind the frigid weather.

In the background, one can just make out the snow people she’s built. There’s a big snow Ken-chan, a little snow Yachiru, a medium size snow Yumichika and a largish pile of shapeless snow that someone obviously cared enough about to pile up , but didn’t care enough to form a person with it. Yachiru looks down at the phone, poking at various buttons until she suddenly realises that…]

Oh! It’s a phone! That’s so cute. And it’s on too!

[Someone looks absolutely thrilled with finding out that she’s got some new kind of phone and that she’s managed to turn it on. Guess who that happens to be!

If you guessed anyone but Yachiru, you fail.]

Hiiii!

[A tiny hand, red with the cold flails about in front of the camera as Yachiru waves hello.]

Ken-chan! You can come get me now! I’m at a reeeeally big field somewhere! And it’s kinda cold, and I’m hungry!

Third Person Sample: Yachiru wasn’t really sure where she’d ended up, but she didn’t really mind. Wherever it was, it looked like it was going to be a lot of fun! There was lots and lots of snow everywhere! It snowed in the Seireitei, of course, but usually by the time she got to it it was all dirty and used up. This snow was brand new and sparkling in such a pretty way! It never looked that way in Seireitei, especially not in the Eleventh Division grounds! Well, after a few hours with Yachiru, it wouldn’t look that way any more!

Yachiru bounded away from the spot she was in, making her way to a flattish area of land before she began to form a large snowball to form the base of her Snow-Ken-chan. Or maybe it could be a snow Byakun! Maybe even a snow Yun-Yun! No, she decided as she set the large snowball into place and patted some more snow onto it to round it out, it would have to be a snow Ken-chan.

She was very sure that, even in snow form, Ken-chan would scare away any attackers. If she decided to build the other snow Shinigami, a snowy Kenny would certainly protect them, and he might even be less grumpy about the job as the real Ken-chan might be!
