Yeah, i know what you mean. Last time I traded in a car, it was an '89 Chev Cavalier Z-24. The original price tag was $9,800. After four years of monthly paments, the final cost was $11,200. After 7 more years of driving it, I was able to get $285 cash or $400 trade-in.
My car was a 1995 Ford Tarus. I bought it in 2003 off the lot of $5000. So in three years, it decreased at an insane amount. I've probably inveted $3000 into it, since I had to buy it a new head gasket, re-do the power steering and fix some wires in the motor..etc
The dealership gave us $100 for it though, because that is how much a junk yard would have taken it for scraps.
