I've never read any of Robert Jordan's books, but it sounds like he deliberately left it open. I guess I probably would have preferred to have the end of the series written, if I had read the beginning, but at least this particular brand of unfinished seems deliberate. It's like you have the author's approval to make up the end for yourself.

You mentioned Tolkien, so naturally I have to be truly geeky and point out that he also left a massive amount of unfinished work. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is finished, but there's an incredible number of stories of Middle-earth that Tolkien never finished telling, and summarized history with large blank spots. It can be immensely frustrating to read the stories that start out being fantastic but don't have an ending, or that have several contradictory versions, or that just don't exist except for a brief mention. At the same time, though, it's always fun to fill in the details for myself, and there's always more to fill in.
